Lake Ashi |
Situated some 720 m above sea level, Lake Ashi is the largest lake in Kanagawa prefecture, with an area of seven square kilometers and a circumference of 19 km. Lake Ashi is also one of Hakone's key tourist attractions, framed by the nearby mountain range that includes the famous Mt. Fuji. On a clear day you can see the inverted image of Mt. Fuji reflected in the waters of the lake, one of the defining scenic images of Hakone. Leisure cruises ply the route between Kojiri on the north shore and the township of Hakone to the south. Legend has it that Lake Ashi is home to a nine-headed dragon, which is presented with an offering of traditional red rice at the Hakone Shrine Lake Ashi Festival on July 31 every year. |
